'Cane Sword
15-Sep-09
We were fortunate to have a gentleman stop and talk to Karen while she
was doing a demo at Lehmans Store in Kidron. He told her about a
sugarcane sword to strip leaves off before harvesting. Previously we had
done this by hand, but the sword is much easier and quicker.
The sword is made from a 3-1/4" x 24" x 3/4" piece of wood, preferably
a lighter weight wood like poplar. I cut the handle 1" wide x 6" long and
then used a 1/4" radius on the corners. The blade was cut at a 15° angle
on all 4 sides, leaving about 1/16" blunt edge. I left 1" from the handle
to the blade for a hand guard. I sanded it smooth and went to work on the
'cane. The sword breaks the leaves off cleanly without having to pull
them down.
