3rd week of March 2007

The few days of sunshine have moved me into planting action. Salad greens such as Swiss chard, salad burnet and Kale were started in flats along with several varieties of lettuce. Seven kinds of peppers are starting to germinate along with some early herbs. My flats of onions and broccoli got started later than planned but will hopefully catch up.

We are eating plentiful salads of spinach and mache that overwintered in the greenhouse and I also noticed a few pea shoots peeking through in the greenhouse. The cold wet weather will limit digging in the garden for several weeks yet. The chickens have noticed that it is spring and are laying with gusto and we are enjoying the extra orange yolks again.
