4th week of March 2007

The exciting news around the farm this week was the arrival of the first calf of the season.  "Daffodil" was born to "Bluebell" [one of our Hereford beef cows] and it is a beautiful sight to see mama and baby together in the pasture.  We'll try to forget the hour long rodeo we had chasing the calf back to the right pasture one morning!Bluebell with calf, Daffodil

My 25 varieties of tomatoes are germinating nicely in the heat of the greenhouse.   Today I was busy putting peppers, herbs and snapdragons into bigger packs and they went under the grow lights.  The garden still feels plenty wet but perhaps tomorrow I'll scratch enough space to plant some radishes and greens outdoors.  Our children were delighted to have a salad made with baby lettuce instead of just spinach.  I enjoyed adding some baby lovage leaves and new sorrel for  some different flavors and the abundant  chickweed also ends up in the salad bowl.
