It is feeling like summer where the morning and evening are the most pleasant times to work outdoors and afternoons are spent out of the sun. Now the rush to get all the tomatoes, peppers, melons, cukes, gourds,... in the ground has started so I don't have to keep up with the daily watering in the greenhouse.
Beans are peeping out of the ground and the various colors and textures of lettuce beds combine to look like a piece of artwork and it's almost a shame to pick them.
Last week I laid out the squares for a garden for each of our children which is something we have done since the children were each about 2 years old. They have full control over what gets planted in their plots and have the duties of weeding, watering, mulching, etc. It is amazing to see the ownership they take in those little plots and what everyone chooses to plant, beets and blue potatoes are popular with the little boys. Elizabeth was sure to get a Garden Peach tomato for hers and Reuben has corn, 3 of his favorite tomatoes and a carefully calculated bed for flowers of differing height and colors. Hopefully it will be a good way to inspire the next generation in their gardening careers and they will remember more than the hours of weeding and mulching in mom's garden.
