2nd week of November 2007

Jerusalem ArtichokesThe cool damp days find us indoors these days but warmer days beckon us outdoors to finish up garden tasks before the cold arrives to stay. There are still trellises to pull out and potatoes to dig but progress is being made. Most of the tulips and daffodils are now in the ground, some planted by our children unsupervised so we'll have some pleasant surprises in the spring. In preparing one of the tulip beds we ran into the forgotten Jerusalem artichokes. As we started digging them I was amazed at the huge harvest of tubers that would come from a single plant. That inspired me to plant a couple extra rows for next year and now I have go figure out ways to cook them that my family will approve of.

Auracana Green EggElizabeth was quite excited over her first Arucana chicken egg. It was a beautiful pale green and she is having fun showing it to her friends and is looking forward to having enough to sneak into customer cartons. Our six year old wanted to crack it to see if it had a green yolk also! They aren't the only ones who get excited over unusual colors though. The Johnnys market gardener seed catalog just arrived and already I've marked the purple mizuna and red veined sorrel as "must-haves."
