4th week of November 2007

Bird FeederCold has officially set in, the temperature went down to 16 last evening. Amazingly, I still could pick greens from the cold frame once the day heated up a bit. Greens like spinach, chard, mache and kale are just plain tough but after this cold snap the lettuce is done till spring. A few weeks ago I harvested some horseradish root and gave it a whirl in the blender with vinegar. After the eerie cloud disappeared and my tears stopped flowing I had three pints put in the fridge for spicing up winter meals (and chasing away any nasal malady!).

Thanksgiving DecorationsWe not only have food tucked away for our family but also some for our feathered friends. The sugar cane seed heads make tasty treats along with sunflower heads, millet and corn. For Thanksgiving I made centerpieces that could become a meal for the birds after the humans were finished along with some wreathes filled with tasty things for birds. Our son Reuben also creatively put together a bird feeding station for our porch. So far we have sighted blue jays, cardinals, sparrows and red-headed woodpeckers enjoying their seedy feast.
