1st week of October 2007

It's hard to believe that we turned the calendar to October already. I can sense a slight slow down in the work load though I also am reminded of the cover crops that I haven't gotten in yet, the sugar cane that needs harvested andWedding bouquet a few details needed to finish cold frame plantings. I'm hustling to keep the dehydrator filled with teas and herbs that need to be harvested before frost hits so we'll have an abundant supply of winter tea blends. The fall-like weather has been refreshing and I'm thankful for some rain showers to give my lettuce a boost but I should also get the hoe in action to knock out the tiny weeds that woke up. We had delicious baked butternut squash for supper with the leftovers creating a pumpkin pudding from my grandma's recipe. It's also been a treat to bring in handfuls of snow peas and we anticipate shell peas coming ripe soon.

FlowersI'm also thankful that my flowers held out long enough to have plenty to supply a wedding open house for a friend over the weekend. Tacos were on the menu so I took artistic liberties in adding garlic, hot pepper branches and tomatillo sprigs to some arrangements. I was also glad for a good excuse to abundantly use all the red zinnias I had planted along with the late sunflowers that I was afraid might get frosted before they bloomed . It's amazing how much flowers can brighten up a room and set the tone for a celebration. There were also a few adventuresome teenagers who did some taste testing on the bouquets and found out the Laotian chiles were quite hot.
